Complete and submit this form to report your name change: REC 1.22 Request BROKER Name Change And/Or Request To Replace BROKER License/Pocket Card .

Once your license record has been updated, you must download or print your new pocket card. (Instructions for accessing your pocket card are provided under the “How do I access my Pocket Card?” section of this page.)
These notices are sent to notify licensees when changes have been made in their license records. Some changes occur based on licensees’ requests, such as address changes or firm affiliations. Other changes result from missed deadlines or requirements. The license of a broker who does not timely complete CE, for example, will be changed to Inactive status.

It’s important to review carefully any notice you receive, to ensure your license record is up-to-date and accurate.

To access your license record, go the Broker Login page on the Commission’s website and enter your license number and PIN.
The license renewal period is May 15 - June 30 each year.

Commission rule 58A .0503 requires licensees to renew their licenses online, on the Commission’s website.

To renew, click on the appropriate renewal link on the Commission’s homepage and log into your license record. Answer the required questions and then submit the $45.00 renewal fee by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or PayPal. Upon successful renewal, a receipt will be provided, and you may download a new pocket card.
All brokers must take 8 hours of CE each license year (between July 1 and June 10) to maintain active status in compliance with 21 NCAC Rule 58A .1702.
  • Provisional brokers and non-BIC brokers must complete the General Update course + one 4-hour Elective.
  • Brokers with BIC Eligible status must complete the Broker-in-Charge Update Course (BICUP) + one 4-hour Elective.

It depends on how long it has been since your license expired.

If it has been less than 6 months (July 1-December 31 of the same year of expiration), you may click on the appropriate reinstatement link on the Commission’s homepage and log into your expired license record. Answer the required questions and then submit the $90.00 reinstatement fee by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or PayPal. Upon successful reinstatement, a receipt will be provided, and you may download a new pocket card.

If it has been more than 6 months, review the Reinstate your License page on the Commission’s website for instructions.
Complete and submit the License Activation and Broker Affiliation (Form REC 2.08) form.

NOTE: If you are a Provisional Broker, your new BIC should submit the form on your behalf.

If you are leaving a firm, complete and submit the Request to Terminate Your Affiliation with a Firm or Sole Proprietorship (Form REC 2.22) .
Per Commission rule 58A .0110(e)(6) , to qualify for BIC Eligible status, a broker must:

  1. hold a “full” broker license on Active status;
  2. have at least two years of full-time or four years of part-time real estate brokerage experience within the previous five years or shall be a North Carolina licensed attorney with a practice that consisted primarily of handling real estate closings and related matters in North Carolina for three years immediately preceding application; and
  3. complete the 12-hour Broker-in-Charge Course no earlier than one year prior to application and no later than 120 days after application.
If you meet these qualification requirements, you must complete and submit the Request for BIC-Eligible Status and/or Broker-In-Charge Designation (Form REC 2.25) to attain the status.

Don’t know your license number?
  • When your broker license was issued, the Commission sent you a wall certificate with the license number displayed in the top-right corner. Also, your pocket card shows your license number.
  • If your license is on active status, you may search the NCREC Licensee Database on the Commission’s website.
  • If your license is expired or inactive and you do not have access to your wall certificate or pocket card, you may contact the Education and Licensing Division for assistance by phone at 919-875-3700 Ext. 772 or by email at ls@ncrec.gov .
Your license may be Inactive for several reasons, as follows:
  • You did not timely complete Continuing Education.
To maintain active status, all brokers must complete 8 hours of CE each license year, between July 1 – June 10, consisting of an Update course and an elective course. Read more.
  • You did not timely complete Postlicensing education.
To maintain active status, Provisional brokers must complete the 90-hour Postlicensing education program, in addition to CE. Read more.
  • You are a Provisional Broker who is not affiliated with a Broker-in-Charge (BIC).
Provisional Brokers are issued licenses on Inactive status. To activate the license, you must affiliate with a BIC. See Rules 58A.0506 & 58A.1902 .
  • You failed to renew your license by June 30, but you reinstated it on or before December 31 of the same year.
If you do not renew your license between May 15th and June 30th, your license will expire. Reinstating your license during the first six months is very easy, but your license is restored on Inactive status. To activate the license, you must submit the License Activation and Broker Affiliation (Form REC 2.08) form.
  • If you do NOT have a CE deficiency:
  • If your license has been Inactive for less than 2 years, and you have a CE deficiency:

    AND

    AND THEN
submit the License Activation and Affiliation form (REC 2.08).
  • If you license has been Inactive for MORE than 2 years, and you have a CE deficiency:
Successfully complete two 30-hour Postlicensing courses (courses must be completed within 6 months prior to submitting activation form),
    AND
    complete the current year’s CE requirement (i.e., take the General Update + 1 Commission-approved elective);
    AND THEN
submit the License Activation and Affiliation form (REC 2.08).
